Materials Use / RoHS
SGI has stringent design standards in place that prohibit and/or restrict the use of certain hazardous substances in our products. Many of these restrictions have been in place for years, such as asbestos, PCBs, ozone depleting compounds (ODCs/CFCs), and mercury in packaging materials. However, we are continually updating our design criteria to ensure our new products comply with all of the global materials restriction requirements. Partnering with our supply chain is critical as we work to comply with these requirements. SGI communicates its environmental policy, practices and impacts to suppliers and contractors via a number of supply chain management tools. SGI is committed to using environmentally friendly alternatives to hazardous substances in all areas where a suitable alternative has been identified.M An example of the materials use restrictions requirements SGI is working to comply with include California RoHS, China RoHS, European Union RoHS, IMERC, Japanese Green Procurement, Korea RoHS, and Vermont Mercury.

European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances (EU RoHS) - European Union Directive 2002/95/EC The SGI® Altix® family systems as well as SGI storage products shipping into the EU are compliant with the EU RoHS directive. SGI will has certified that these products are in compliance with the EU RoHS directive. Certain SGI legacy products have not been certified under the new regulations and are therefore not available for shipment into the EU. However, all new products developed by SGI will be designed to meet the EU RoHS directive requirements. The provision of spare parts is exempted under the RoHS Directive and thus maintenance and support arrangements for older products are not affected. Some of the high-end SGI products have a lead application that was eligible for exemption until 2010. To not compromise quality SGI took that exemption, until which time there is a suitable, high quality alternative or until 2010. Under the EU RoHS directive EU Customers and SGI EU resellers should contact their SGI Account Manager for additional information regarding which SGI products are RoHS compliant and therefore available for purchase in the EU.
