Technology Companies Announce Support for Canadian Researchers
Plan would give scientists across Canada access to supercomputing resources Toronto, ON - November 9, 2005 - Today seven leading technology companies announced support of a Long Range Plan for High Performance Computing in Canada. The plan, calling for government investment in a national strategy to expand a network of supercomputers across the country, was developed by C3.ca, a not-for-profit pan-Canadian association of academic users of high performance computing systems. Canadian universities and industrial laboratories use supercomputers for research in areas such as drug development, astrophysics, financial modeling, disease containment and nanotechnology. However, many Canadian researchers don't have access to supercomputing resources, which can be crucial to accelerating research. Apple, Cray, HP, IBM, NEC, SGI and SUN have endorsed C3.ca's long-range plan to make supercomputing power available to researchers across the country, which will enable collaboration and ongoing scientific discovery. The plan calls for sustained funding over time, growth in available expertise, and the establishment of a national supercomputing facility that will consistently be ranked at equivalent levels to other research active nations in terms of overall computing capacity. The plan also includes provisions to help scientists and their research teams develop the skills necessary to fully take advantage of supercomputing's potential, and to extend these skills into university programs covering a wide range of disciplines. "High Performance Computing systems make it possible for scientists to conduct research much more quickly than in the past, and to simulate complex or dangerous situations," said Bruce Attfield, C3.ca's Secretary/Treasurer. "C3.ca's long-range plan will give researchers in Canada access to the supercomputing power required to make leading edge discoveries, which is critical in the competitive world of research. Research and development are integral to Canada's economy. It's vital that all researchers be given the tools they need to produce at the highest level and the supporting experts to allow them to concentrate on their research, rather than the technical detail necessary to use those tools most effectively - the Long Range Plan is a critical element in the overall equation."
