Busan MechaMAP Selects SGI Technology as Infrastructure for Design and Engineering Applications
Korea's Largest SGI Altix 1350 cluster with 120 processors available to small and medium-sized companies in the machine parts industry SEOUL, South Korea (February 20, 2006)MechaMAP, an organization located within Busan Techno Park, South Korea today announced that it has selected a cluster and storage solution from SGI (OTC: SGID) to enable small and medium-sized enterprises to boost their IT infrastructure. The installation from SGI Korea of a SGI® Altix® 1350 cluster and 3.2TB SGI InfiniteStorage is expected to be completed by the end of February. MechaMAP provides technical support and joint research for small and medium-sized companies in the machine parts industry located in the southern region of South Korea, which includes metropolitan areas such as Busan, Daegu, Gyungnam, Gyungbuk, and others. The new SGI Altix cluster will be used to supplement companies' smaller design and engineering IT infrastructure. Mr. Seung Kyu Kang, a researcher at MechaMAP explained, "The machine parts industry relies heavily on IT infrastructure and applications such as computer-aided engineering and computational fluid dynamics for engineering and design. However, many small-to-medium-sized companies in the industry find it difficult to make the considerable investments required for such hardware and software. We have decided to deploy and make available to those companies a high performance SGI computer and storage as a partial solution to this problem." Once fully deployed, MechaMAP's Altix cluster will become a shared infrastructure that provides the processing power for the engineering and analysis of the structural, thermal, and fluid flow behavior of component and part designs for companies in the machinery, automotive, and heat exchanger industries. The deployment of the SGI Altix cluster has additional significance because it will be the primary system deployed as part of a larger cluster that is planned for connecting major metropolitan areas such as Seoul, Daejun and Busan. Based on the acclaimed SGI® Altix® 350 server, the Altix 1350 cluster is a factory-integrated cluster that matches Altix performance and functionality while reducing total cost of ownership. Altix 1350 cluster nodes scale up to 32 Intel® Itanium® 2 processors on a single instance of the Linux® operating system. Having this ability to scale at the node - rather than by adding new nodes for increased computing needs - means that users have fewer nodes to connect, manage and provision. This also translated into spending far less on software licensing and networking. As the first phase in implementing the 1 teraflop of computing power, MechaMAP will be installing 8 Altix 350 servers in the Altix 1350 cluster, connecting a total of 120 Itanium 2 processors. In addition, Altix 1350 will be equipped with the latest interconnection technology, InfiniBand, and gigabit Ethernet to ensure sufficient network bandwidth, as well as cluster management software for efficient management, batch job management software, and interconnect fabric monitoring software, for highly cost-efficient to create a reliable and effective HPC environment. MechaMAP is also deploying 3.2TB SGI InfiniteStorage TP9300 for storing large machine parts design and engineering files, and to provide a fast data management system for improved workflow efficiencies. MechaMAP stated that it considered price/performance, scalability of memory, and reliability in choosing the SGI solution for the project. MechaMAP researcher, Mr. or Dr. Kang explained his company's decision to deploy Altix 1350, "The results of the tests pointed us to Altix cluster's NUMAflex shared memory technology. It was proven to be effective in providing maximum bandwidth and memory scalability for our large processing jobs, which are essential elements of HPC. Our in-house code benchmarking tests also showed Altix 1350 with 8 CPUs to have nearly 3 times the performance of a Xeon cluster system with the same number of CPUs." Deployment of MechaMAP's Altix cluster is expected to be completed by the end of February, and once the system is ready, MechaMAP plans to accept projects from small and medium sized companies that wish to utilize its infrastructure from its website, www.mechamap.or.kr. Once approved, companies can utilize the Altix system either online or onsite at MechaMAP's computer center.
