SGI and FedCentric Technologies LLC Announce Memory-Centric Database (MCDB) Accelerator Solution MCDB Accelerator Outperforms Disk-Based Systems by as Much as 10 Times, While Consuming Less Power and Less Space SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., (November 12, 2007)—Companies needing business analysis for applications such as revenue protection, social network analysis, fraud detection, Web analytics, biometrics, RFID and complex event processing can now achieve at least an order of magnitude improvement in application performance with a landmark, memory-centric, energy-efficient computing solution from FedCentric Technologies, an SGI (NASDAQ: SGIC) and Oracle Value Added Reseller. The FedCentric MCDB Accelerator solution will be demonstrated at Oracle OpenWorld, November 11-15 at the Moscone Center West Booth #3424 in San Francisco.Powered by SGI® Altix® 4700 or SGI® Altix® 450 servers, the FedCentric MCDB Accelerator solution uses in-memory database technology to provide significant improvement in response time and throughput over traditional disk-based systems. "Our MCDB Accelerator solution brings unparalleled performance in business analytics solutions to the enterprise," said Gerry Kolosvary, CEO, FedCentric Technologies. "Using open standards and innovative system architecture, we deliver the scalability and reliability needed to quickly process massive amounts of data, enabling organizations to solve enterprise business challenges previously thought impossible or impractical with traditional disk-based systems. Not only will customers gain in processing speed with this solution, they will also benefit from the decrease in power consumption and the smaller data center footprint." Because the FedCentric MCDB Accelerator is a memory based system, users can put all the data in memory for fast access, eliminating the need for up to dozens of racks to achieve high data throughput. The MCDB Accelerator delivers results that can be 10 or more times faster than disk-based systems, while consuming less power and less space in the typical enterprise data center. 1 The FedCentric MCDB Accelerator is positioned to deliver groundbreaking results because it has the capability to support very large amounts of memory—up to 23 terabytes—in a single system image. FedCentric is able to add memory to the SGI system modularly, enabling users to scale memory to meet their growing needs. The FedCentric MCDB Accelerator leverages SGI's experience in low-energy consumption, high-density, standards-based systems combined with FedCentric Technologies' expertise in delivering orders of magnitude increases in database applications. It delivers a new way to work with large data sets that optimizes rapid transaction and query processing. SGI - Innovation for Results FedCentric Technologies, LLC © 2007 SGI. All rights reserved. The disk-based systems achieve high performance by striping data across large numbers of spinning disks. Spinning disks require significantly more floor space, consume more power and conversely generate heat, which must be cooled.
