ATM: The Right Choice for Guaranteed Bandwidth

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is the preferred networking solution for applications that require guaranteed bandwidth. The quality of service and dynamic bandwidth reservation attributes of ATM provide a powerful high-speed infrastructure for applications that call for multiple, simultaneous data streams at constant or nearly constant rates. Applications such as voice, video-on-demand, and real-time applications will benefit most from ATM. SGI offers a full selection of ATM adapters to meet a wide variety of customer needs.

Four-Port ATM OC3

The IRIS Four-Port ATM OC3 network adapter includes two onboard RISC processors and four independent SONET OC3 ports (155Mbps per port for a total of 622Mbps per adapter), providing full-duplex throughput on all ports simultaneously.

Depending on the application mix, the network adapter can support up to 256 virtual channels (VCs) per port. Each adapter has 4MB of local memory per port shared between receive and transmit functions and 512KB of local control memory per port for VC tables, cell scheduling tables, and received cell buffers. The IRIS Four-Port ATM OC3 network adapter also includes:

  • A character device API for environments that require CBR traffic or other custom applications
  • An ILMI management daemon, with SNMP MIB accessible through either ATM ports or other IP networking interfaces
  • Firmware performance optimizations for transmitting MPEG-2 transport PDUs (tinygrams)

The IRIS Multiport ATM OC3 network adapter fully complies with versions 3.0 and 3.1 of the ATM Forum's ATM User-Network Interface standard. It supports ATM adaptation layer 5 (AAL5) over constant bit rate (CBR) and best-effort traffic (UBR) and all standard IP applications (through SVCs and/or PVCs), using best-effort traffic contracts in compliance with RFC 1577 (classical IP over ATM).

Providing 622Mbps of full-duplex bandwidth to connect servers directly to ATM backbones, the SGI Single-Port OC12 ATM adapter is perfectly designed to meet the bandwidth requirements of bulk networking data while guaranteeing the quality of service needed for voice and video.

The Single-Port OC3 and OC12 ATM adapters from SGI deliver full-duplex connectivity over multimode fiber (SC connector). With support for 4,096 virtual circuits and 2MB of synchronous DRAM for buffering, the Single-Port ATM OC3 and OC12 adapters lead the field in ATM networking. With support for LANE 1.0, the mandatory items of LANE 2.0, and MPOA, these adapters are well-suited to environments that require ATM integration with legacy networks.
