The Advanced IRIX Operating System IRIX 6.5 is the SGI mature 64-bit UNIX operating system whose roots originate from IRIX 6.0, introduced in 1994. IRIX 6.5 is UNIX 95 certified by the Open Group and supports all the major industry standards, including POSIX, UNIX SVR4, Year 2000, X11 and Motif, and OpenGL®. IRIX 6.5 supports all SGI systems, including the current product line, Origin®, Onyx2®, Octane®, Octane2, and O2®, and the older systems, CHALLENGE®, Onyx®, Indigo2, Indigo®, and Indy®. Most applications built on earlier IRIX releases, IRIX 5.3 and above, run without recompilation on IRIX 6.5. With a focus on serviceability and a predictable maintenance schedule, IRIX 6.5 gives you control over the administration and integration of your computing environment. Intuitive Software Tools The Silicon Graphics visual workstations provide users with a complete, easy-to-use environment for accelerating workflow and enhancing productivity. Extending the desktop to merge it with the Web, the systems offer users a total solution for creating, browsing, and serving data on intranet and Internet networks. Ease of Integration As mixed computing environments become more prevalent, users need a way to easily integrate new systems into their existing work environments. Each Silicon Graphics visual workstation system includes connectivity software that makes it easy to blend the workstation into heterogeneous environments. With built-in applications such as XFS, Novell NetWare Client, Xinet AppleTalk®, and Samba, SGI systems can instantly network with PC and Mac® systems. SGI systems also ship with a number of collaboration applications that allow users to easily share files across multiple operating systems. These include SGImeeting, a data conferencing tool that enables distributed users to collaborate with one another regardless of what operating system they are using. SGImeeting lets users team up with professionals on systems that use Microsoft® Windows®, Sun Solaris, Apple® Macintosh®, or any system on which an International Telecommunications Union (ITU) T.120 compliant tool is used, including Microsoft NetMeeting® and SunForum. Digital Media Tools: Web-Based Help and System Administration Tools Web-based help lets users access documentation anywhere on their systems, networks, or the Internet, ensuring access to the most up-to-date technical information.
