SUBJECT: 12/03/98 SGI's DCE/DFS 1.2.2 for IRIX 6.5 ANNOUNCING DCE 1.2.2 The Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) and Distributed Computing Environment (DFS) Release 1.2.2 for IRIX 6.5 is now available. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION This Silicon Graphics release, DCE 1.2.2, supports the IRIX(R) operating system (OS) 6.5.2 and later and contains the DCE/DFS service components, libraries, and manuals that are needed to install and run DCE version 1.2.2. Previous versions of DCE are not supported on IRIX 6.5.2. If customers upgrade to IRIX 6.5 or later and want to use DCE/DFS, they must use this version. This release supports the DCE clients, DFS client, development components, and domestic security option. The DCE security server, DCE cell directory server (CDS), and DFS servers are not supported by this release. This Silicon Graphics release is based on Open Software Foundation, Inc.'s (OSF) DCE/DFS version 1.2.2. New Silicon Graphics Features ----------------------------- * DCE integrated login binary files are no longer packaged as a separate component. With IRIX 6.5.2 and later, DCE login support is integrated into the commands released with IRIX (ftpd, rexecd, login, xdm, xlock, and clogin). With the 1.1C release, they were installed from the DCE package. This resolves the problem of IRIX updates overwriting the integrated login binaries. The integrated login feature is implemented on an individual user basis. To activate integrated login, refer to Section 7.3 of the DCE 1.2.2 Release Notes. * A command called dce_su is now shipped with the DCE package and installed in the /opt/dcelocal/bin directory. This command replaces the DCE integrated login functionality which used to be an option in the su command. This solves the login problem when running in single user mode or any other time the libdce library is not accessible. * The rexecd command now contains support for DCE integrated login. * The clogin command now contains support for DCE integrated login. * DCE threads are now layered on top of IRIX pthreads. This implementation provides additional concurrency for DCE applications by allowing multiple threads to run concurrently on multi-CPU machines. When you write an application using DCE threads, you must include the DCE pthread header file, not the IRIX header file. You can differentiate the DCE pthread header file from the IRIX pthread header file by prepending a DCE pathname component to pthread.h, as shown in the following example: #include * The dce_config(8) script now supports configuration through command-line arguments. This feature allows system administrators to configure DCE and DFS easily with a simple command or script. DEPENDENCIES/COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION This release requires the IRIX 6.5.2 operating system, or later. Previous versions of SGI's DCE/DFS are not supported on the IRIX 6.5 release family. Distribution ------------ The DCE/DFS clients, DCEXC, are now part of the Advanced Server Environment (ASE) and Advanced Workstation Environment (AWE) packages and is not ordered separately. To obtain your IRIX DCE/DFS 1.2.2 package - * The customer site may download this software from the "Download Cool Software" Web site at: http://www.sgi.com/Products/Evaluation/#dce_dfs * If the site is unable to download the software from the Web site and the site has an Advanced Server Environment (ASE) or an Advanced Workstation Environment (AWE) support contract, site personnel may call the Customer Service Center at 1-800-800-4SGI and request the "DCE Base Executive/Client 1.2.2" CD. * DCE 1.2.2 is automatically shipped with the Advanced Server Environment (ASE) or Advanced Workstation Environment (AWE) package for all new SGI IRIX systems and to customers who order IRIX 6.5 after the release of IRIX 6.5.2. * Customers who have licensed the Domestic Security Option (DCEDOM) must request the "DCE U.S. Domestic Security 1.2.2" CD by calling the Customer Service Center at 1-800-800-4SGI. Export laws prohibit SGI from shipping this package to customers outside the U.S. or Canada; therefore, it cannot be made available through an unregulated Web site. * Customers who are licensed for the DCE executive or the DCE domestic product will receive this release as part of a ASE/AWE delayed push. This push does not currently have an estimated ship date.
