High Performance Computing Meets Big Data
Big Data Hadoop is moving from development and test cases, to small-scale production, to large-scale production mode. Hadoop is well tested in development/test and small-scale projects but is new to the demands of meeting the more exacting requirements of large-scale production workloads, including meeting deadlines and SLAs. Automation, measuring SLAs, production problem high-availability (recovering from node failure) and problem determination tools suitable for large-scale Hadoop are still work in progress.

SGI announced that the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in the United Kingdom has selected three SGI® ICE X™ systems to rapidly advance sophisticated scientific and technological capabilities, and to enhance the simulation methods used to verify the safety and reliability of the Trident warhead.
The Atomic Weapons Establishment manufactures and maintains warheads for the UK's nuclear deterrent, Trident. This encompasses the entire life cycle of nuclear warheads, from initial concept, assessment and design through component manufacture and assembly, in-service support, decommissioning and then disposal.
SGI receives order for Data Assimilation Supercomputer from the Institute of Statistical Mathematics

SGI has received an order for a new Data Assimilation Supercomputer from the Institute of Statistical Mathematics. The Data Assimilation Supercomputer will expand SGI's global footprint in the supercomputing space.
The new supercomputer will be built around the SGI® UV™ 2000, SGI's large-scale shared-memory server. It will provide a shared computational infrastructure for statistical computation and data assimilation, which is a critical step in the research process of a number of scientific disciplines. Data assimilation requires vast amounts of memory space to optimally process and run the advanced simulation models used to reproduce real phenomena – a task which is particularly suited to the 64TB memory of the SGI UV supercomputer.
