This course provides inexperienced users of the SGI IRIX operating system
with an opportunity to study and practice using its features.
Students will gain practical experience using essential operating system
tools, commands, and utilities. The course focuses on IRIX commands entered
from a shell window. SGI's IRIX operating system is based on
the UNIX® operating system and includes features from both Berkeley
and AT&T System V.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate use of basic IRIX commands
- Create and modify files with the vi editor
- Navigate the file system
- Create, remove, list, print, and manipulate files and directories
- Control access to files and directories with standard security features
- Enter commands that use shell I/O redirection, pipes, and filters
- Configure the T and C shells environment and utilize their features
- Perform basic communications between networked systems
- Customize and personalize the desktop on an IRIX workstation
Prerequisites
This course is intended for:

Programmers, maintenance personnel, and novice system administrators who
have previous experience with computers, but not necessarily either IRIX
or UNIX.

Novice UNIX users who wish to become self-sufficient using IRIX commands
to perform tasks on their IRIX workstations.
The student is over-qualified if he/she:
- Has had daily experience using UNIX commands for the past year.
