The IRIX System Administration I course provides knowledge and practice in such basic administrative areas as account management, system monitoring, disk partitioning, filesystem creation and maintenance, run level control, backup and restore, and software installation.

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Set up an IRIS workstation
- Reference the IRIX online documentation
- Manage user accounts
- Monitor system activity
- Partition disks
- Create and maintain filesystems
- Create and maintain logical volumes
- Start and stop the system in various ways
- Utilize run levels to run the system in different ways
- Backup and restore files and filesystems
- Recover a failed system
- Install software
- Maintain elements of the system using graphical tools
- Configure user-level desktop settings (optional)
- Configure printers using commands and scripts (optional)
Target Audience
This course is intended for:
- Novice or somewhat experienced IRIX system administrators
- Experienced IRIX users who must maintain their own systems
- Somewhat experienced UNIX system administrators
Prerequisites
- Introduction to IRIX and three months experience using IRIX, or
- Familiarity with system administration on other open system platforms and familiarity with the vi editor
