This course is designed to provide the system support engineer (SSE) with the skills necessary to install, configure, and perform first-line maintenance of the SGI® storage area networks (SAN) solution.

The course introduces the 1-, 2- 4- and 8-Gb/s Brocade® SilkWorm® series family of Fibre Channel switches and switch features such as zoning, trunking, and fabric monitors. SGI supported SAN topologies are also addressed.

At course completion, the student will be able to install and configure Fibre Channel switches, connect storage systems and servers, perform fabric route analysis and tuning, isolate SAN failures to the field-replaceable unit (FRU) level in a heterogeneous environment, and perform routine maintenance tasks using a command line interface and graphical user interface.

  • Explain SAN, server, and storage relationships
  • Install, configure, analyze, and tune fabric for optimal performance
  • Create zones for security and heterogeneous environments
  • Configure fabric monitoring utilities
  • Perform fabric diagnosis and corrective-action procedures

Prerequisites

  • Student must be a SGI-approved service provider
  • Non-GCS service personnel must possess a maintenance agreement
  • Students must have a laptop computer configured with the Windows operating system.
  • Students must have SGI Altix series server experience
  • Students should have successfully complete a storage course (TP9100, TPSSA, DDN, or ISMA)
  • SPT recommends that students complete the Fibre Channel CBT (FC-S)
