This course teaches engineers and service personnel how to perform all maintenance on SGI Origin and Silicon Graphics Onyx2 systems. Students learn to install, configure, troubleshoot, and verify the proper operation of SGI® Origin® 200 and SGI® 2000 series servers and Onyx2 systems. During the labs, malfunctions are introduced so students can acquire hands-on experience using diagnostics and troubleshooting techniques.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Trace the flow of data through the CPU and graphics subsystems and correctly describe the purpose of each functional block
  • Identify how the system configures logic boards and I/O devices during the boot process
  • Interconnect multiple system modules
  • Correctly run specific diagnostics that are designed to locate a single field replaceable unit (FRU) or verify that the system is functioning correctly
  • Isolate an induced failure to a single FRU
  • Demonstrate that he/she has developed basic system administration skills such as gathering required status information, monitoring system activity, installing new software, and partitioning and creating IRIX® filesystems
Prerequisites

Students must have attended SGI Introduction to IRIX or have at least six months of experience with either the IRIX or UNIX operating system.

Target Audience

This course is intended for:

  • Service engineers who are responsible for remedial or preventive maintenance on SGI Origin 200 and SGI 2000 series servers and Onyx2 systems
  • Service engineers who: have experience with UNIX or IRIX operations that traverse the filesystem; can create, modify, and remove files; and can edit text or have attended SGI Introduction to IRIX
  • Students with at least six months of active work experience conducting preventive maintenance on any multiprocessor computer system with greater than four processors

Class starts at 9:00 AM. The course dates and times will be included in the confirmation notice you receive from SGI after you register.

In order for a student to be eligible for a hardware course, the company sponsoring the student must have a contract with SGI that states that the company can service its own equipment. The SGI Education staff will verify the contract prior to a student's enrollment.
