Managing Your IRIX® License

SGI IRIX operating system software is an invaluable component of SGI intellectual property. The IRIX End-User License Agreement states that the IRIX operating system is licensed to the system it originally shipped with and the original owner is bound by the terms in that license.

Since April 2004, MIPS IRIX systems shipped with non-transferable End-User License Agreements for the IRIX operating system. Therefore, the End-User License Agreement becomes void for the transferee when the ownership of the system is transferred. SGI has had various IRIX license policies prior to April 2004, and certain End-User License Agreements may be transferable if there is compliance with its stated terms and conditions. An important condition of a license transfer is to notify SGI prior to a system and license transfer. The table below summarizes the transferability of the original IRIX license.

End-user License Agreement Original System Shipped April 2004 or After* Original System Shipped Jan. 2003 - Mar. 2004* Original System Shipped Prior to Jan. 2003*

IRIX License Information Form
Your IRIX End-user License Agreement is specific to your system and the original owner is bound by the terms in that license. To obtain this information, simply look up your system serial number and complete and submit the IRIX Information Form.

An SGI representative will contact you with the system and software details, including the original system ship date, the status of your IRIX license, and options for renewing or upgrading your IRIX software. The IRIX Information Form may also serve as your notification to SGI if you wish to transfer the End-User License Agreement.

Finally, if you are considering the purchase of an IRIX system from a party other than SGI or an authorized SGI Reseller, the IRIX Information Form will help you understand the potential license costs and how you can ensure that the system you purchase gets a valid IRIX license.
